For millions of Americans, summertime means hitting the water in their favorite watercraft. In fact, recreation.gov reports that about 74 million of us enjoy some form of recreational boating every year, whether in a motor boat, sailboat, raft, canoe, kayak, or yacht.
While most boating experiences are fun outings that end safely, every year there are the inevitable tragedies. A passenger goes overboard, a boat capsizes, or a boat collides with another water craft, and in a split second a fun day out on the water turns deadly.
According to Coast Guard statistics, recreational boating accidents accounted for 4,291 accidents, 658 deaths, and 2,629 injuries in 2017. In accidents where the cause of death was known, drowning was the most common cause, and alcohol use was the number one contributing factor. Operator inattention, operator inexperience, improper lookout, and machinery failure are also primary contributing factors in boating accidents.
There is some good news. Compared to 2016, the number of accidents in 2017 decreased 3.9%, the number of deaths decreased 6.1%, and the number of injuries decreased 9.4%. Encouraging statistics, but the numbers are still too high.
Alcohol is the number one factor contributing to boat accidents. In fact, the probability of a boating accident doubles when alcohol is involved. Play it safe. Wait until you’re on shore to enjoy your favorite beverage. Also, make sure all passengers wear life jackets, even if they know how to swim. Sadly, the majority of drowning victims in boating accidents weren’t wearing their lifejackets at the time.
In addition to making safety a top priority, take a moment to review your boat insurance at least once a year.
Whether you have a yacht, a ski boat or a fishing vessel, find out if your boat insurance will cover these costly what-if scenarios:
- What if your boat’s engine sucks in debris, overheats and sustains physical damage?
- What if you hit a submerged object that damages your hull, causing you to take on water or sink?
- What if you must be towed in?
- What if a major storm sinks your boat at the dock?
- What if water damages an expensive camera you have on board?
- What if your vessel is hit by an uninsured boater?
- What if you run over someone on a kayak causing serious medical injury?
Not all boat insurance policies will cover these costly scenarios. From rafts to yachts and everything in between, BNC will make sure you’re covered for every eventuality. We have policies that include coverage for mechanical breakdown, salvage and wreck removal – all very costly exposures.
